PhD · Registered Psychologist · Apprentice Mental Performance Consultant
Dr. Jennie Johnson
Book with Dr. JennieI've always been fascinated by people, especially young people. In my high school yearbook, I confidently declared I wanted to become a psychologist — even though I wasn't entirely sure what psychologists actually did! After taking my first child psychology class at the University of Calgary, I knew I'd found the right path.
Today, I'm a clinical child and teen psychologist with more than 16 years of experience. I completed my PhD and clinical internship in Ohio, where I worked extensively with children, teens, and families before returning home to Alberta.
I have a particular passion for working with athletes. I hold a Graduate Certificate in Sport and Performance Psychology and I'm an Apprentice Mental Performance Consultant. My dual training in clinical psychology and sport performance allows me to support the whole athlete — both as a person and as a performer. I offer sport psychology support for athletes ages 9–25, and broader youth and young adult mental health support for ages 12–25.
I love helping athletes strengthen their confidence, manage pressure, work through performance anxiety, respond to mistakes, and develop the mental skills needed to perform at their best. Just as importantly, I support athletes with the mental health concerns that can exist alongside competitive sport, including anxiety, perfectionism, identity, burnout, emotional regulation, injury recovery, team dynamics, and fear of failure.
I believe athletes shouldn't have to choose between caring for their mental health and pursuing high performance — my work brings both together. I create a space where athletes can be honest about what they're experiencing while also learning practical strategies they can use in training, competition, school, relationships, and everyday life.
My approach is warm, genuine, practical, and grounded in connection. I take the time to understand each athlete's personality, experiences, goals, and sport environment, and I also work with teams, coaches, and parents to help create cultures where athletes can feel supported, take healthy risks, and compete with confidence.
Being a mother to two athletes has made this work even more meaningful to me. I understand firsthand the excitement, pressure, sacrifice, travel, and emotion that come with youth sport, and I know athletes are more than their statistics, playing time, results, or mistakes — I'm passionate about helping them believe that too.
I'm originally from Red Deer but now live in Okotoks, where my oldest son plays baseball. When I'm not in the office, you can usually find me at a baseball diamond, hockey rink, volleyball court, or somewhere on the road to the next game. I'm so excited to join Flutterby Psychology — I've worked with Josée before and know firsthand the passion, knowledge, and compassion she brings to all her clients and families.
