Trauma can shape how we think, feel, react, and relate long after an experience is over. Trauma counselling at Flutterby is safe and paced — you stay in control throughout, and we never push you to relive anything before you're ready. We offer it in Calgary, Okotoks, and virtually across Alberta.

How trauma shows up

Trauma lives in the nervous system as much as in memory. You might notice anxiety, overwhelm, emotional numbness, irritability, difficulty sleeping, or a sense of being "stuck" even when you want to move forward. You may feel on edge in safe situations, or disconnected from people and your own body. These aren't signs that something is wrong with you — they're often signs that your mind and body have been working hard to protect you.

"Big-T" and "small-t" trauma

When people hear "trauma," they often think of a single major event — an accident, assault, or disaster. These "big-T" traumas are real and overwhelming. But trauma also develops through experiences that seem less obvious from the outside: ongoing criticism, rejection, bullying, chronic stress, unpredictable caregiving, emotional neglect, or repeatedly feeling unsafe, unseen, or unsupported. This is sometimes called "small-t" or developmental and relational trauma.

Our focus is not on deciding whether something "counts" as trauma. It's on understanding how your experiences have shaped you — and helping you heal in a way that feels safe, supportive, and meaningful.

Two people can go through similar situations and be affected very differently. What matters isn't whether an experience seems "serious enough" compared to someone else's, but how it affected you.

How we approach trauma work

Healing happens when people feel safe, supported, and in control — so we move at a pace that feels comfortable for you. We begin not with the hardest memories, but with stability:

  • Safety and grounding first — building the skills to feel more regulated and resourced in daily life
  • Understanding your responses — making sense of why your mind and body react the way they do
  • Gentle processing, when ready — exploring difficult experiences in a way that stays manageable
  • Reconnecting with strengths — rebuilding a sense of safety, choice, and self

Depending on your needs, we may draw on EMDR, somatic and nervous-system approaches, CBT, mindfulness, and emotion-focused work to help your brain and body process what happened. Throughout, you remain in control of the process.

What to expect

Early on, we focus on helping you feel grounded and supported rather than diving into the past. As trust and confidence grow, we may gently explore difficult experiences — always with your sense of safety at the centre. The goal isn't to make you forget. It's to help the past feel less overwhelming, so it no longer has the same hold on your present life and relationships.

Trauma Therapy questions

Common questions

Will I have to relive my trauma?
No. We build safety and grounding first, and only explore difficult material when you feel ready — always at a manageable pace, with you in control.
Does 'small-t' trauma really count?
Yes. Trauma is defined by how an experience affected you, not by how it compares to others'. Ongoing, relational experiences can have a deep and lasting impact.
What approaches do you use for trauma?
Often EMDR alongside somatic, CBT, mindfulness, and emotion-focused approaches — tailored to you and what feels helpful.
How long does trauma therapy take?
It depends on your experiences and goals. We never rush; we move at a pace that keeps you feeling safe and resourced.
Can trauma counselling be done virtually?
Yes — in person in Calgary and Okotoks, and virtually across Alberta.
