Somatic & Yoga-Informed Therapy
Body- and nervous-system-informed therapy
Support for when you understand your challenges intellectually but your body still doesn't feel safe — helping you feel grounded, present, and regulated. In Calgary, Okotoks, or virtually.
Many people come to therapy expecting that if they can understand their experiences logically, they should feel better. Insight matters — but a lot of distress lives in the body and nervous system, not just in our thoughts. Somatic, yoga-informed therapy helps you reconnect with a sense of calm and safety through the body, not only the mind. We offer it in Calgary, Okotoks, and virtually across Alberta.
"I know I'm safe, but my body doesn't feel safe."
When body-based work helps
Somatic and nervous-system-informed approaches can be especially helpful for people who understand their challenges intellectually but still experience strong emotional or physical reactions. You might:
- Feel constantly "on edge," wired, or overwhelmed
- Feel disconnected from your emotions, or numb and "switched off"
- Find yourself stuck in patterns you understand logically but can't seem to change
- Struggle to feel safe, calm, or present even when circumstances are okay
- Carry tension, exhaustion, or unease that talk alone hasn't reached
Understanding your nervous system
Your nervous system is always scanning for safety or threat — often below conscious awareness. After stress or trauma, it can get stuck in patterns of high alert (anxiety, racing thoughts, irritability) or shut-down (numbness, fatigue, disconnection). Somatic work helps you notice these states, understand what they're protecting you from, and gently build your capacity to return to a settled, regulated place.
What somatic, yoga-informed therapy involves
We tailor this work to you — it's never forced or used simply because it's popular. Together we might explore:
- Awareness of how stress and emotion show up in your body
- Grounding and present-moment skills you can use anywhere
- Gentle, breath- and movement-informed practices to support regulation
- Reconnecting with a felt sense of safety, choice, and calm
None of it requires being flexible, "good at yoga," or doing anything that feels uncomfortable. Everything is optional and collaborative — we work at the edge of what feels manageable, never beyond it.
What to expect
We build awareness of your nervous system gradually, helping you recognise patterns of stress and regulation, feel more grounded and present, and respond to your experiences with greater flexibility and self-compassion. Many people find that combining this with talk therapy reaches places that words alone couldn't — a quieter body, steadier emotions, and a renewed sense of being at home in yourself.
